Writing Workshop: Comic Strips

Hello!  I am Hilary G. and my blog is Second Grade is out of This World
Today I wanted to talk about Writer's Workshop (W.W.) !  I love teaching Writer's Workshop!  It is my favorite time of the day.
I have done Writer's Workshop many different ways, but here is how it works the best for me:

Mini-lesson
Turn and Talk
Silent 10 at seats
Writing time (I meet with kiddos to conference or small groups)
Sharing

Every day we take a restroom break before we start Writer's Workshop and during that time the kiddos are supposed to get out whatever they need for writing that day.
Then, they join me on "the magic carpet" for our mini-lesson of the day.  After the mini-lesson is over, the kiddos turn and talk with their partner about their plan for W.W. Then, I start up our "Writing Music".  I have it on my ipad and it is 9 minutes and 37 seconds long, so perfect for our "Silent 10".  This is our time to think, draw, and plan.  After silent 10 is over, the kiddos may move around to find a new spot and start writing.
With that being said, this year I have a group of boys that are obsessed with books like Big Nate and Diary of a Wimpy Kid.  They LOVE writing comic strips!  They will write other things, but given the opportunity, they will write comic strips!  They gather in a group to read, write and giggle (yup, they giggle sometime worse than the girls) over their current creations.

So, recently I introduced this group to a book:

They loved it!  It is now a much sought after read in my room!

Another popular thing in my classroom is the "viral hit"  "What does the fox say?"  If you don't know what I am talking about, go look it up on YouTube.  The song itself is really silly, but the tune is really catchy, and the kiddos LOVE it!

So, I couldn't resist combining the two!  I made up a set of "What does the fox say" comic strip papers.  And yes, thank you for asking!  They were a hit!

If your kiddos are into one or both of these things, stop by and pick up my little freebie!  It includes both color and black and white pages:  fox and horse, just the fox, and a blank comic strip page that could be used for everyday comic strip writing use!  You can get it by clicking on the picture or {here}.
